Sanitary Pad Distribution — Baitul Salaamz Youth, Hammanskraal

The drive was held at Baitul Salaamz Youth Centre — a community centre and vocational training hub in Hammanskraal — with young women and students as the primary participants. The objective was to provide essential menstrual health resources, education, and vocational training materials, supporting community development, health equity, and individual empowerment.

The Problem: Period Poverty and Its Impact

The critical issue being addressed is Period Poverty. This is not merely a lack of access to sanitary products; it is a multifaceted barrier that severely impacts the lives of girls and young women in Hammanskraal.

Educational Barriers — An estimated one in ten girls in sub-Saharan Africa misses school during their menstrual cycle. Without adequate products, many girls find themselves falling behind and facing a higher risk of dropping out.

Health and Hygiene Risks — A lack of access forces girls to use improvised and unsanitary materials, significantly increasing their risk of infections.

Dignity and Mental Health — The stigma surrounding menstruation, compounded by the inability to manage hygiene properly, leads to deep shame, anxiety, and a loss of confidence.
